The 47th Golden Horse Film Festival took place today in Taiwan and the results are out. Since I didn’t write a prepost like I normally would, I’ll just plainly show you the nominees and announce the winners, no suspense there. You know the drill, click on the images to enlarge.

17 Movies You Might Want to See in 2010, Part 1

2010 looks to be an exciting year for the Chinese film industry. There is a fairly large selection lined up for the year to come and at first glance, the quality is reasonably proportional to the quantity. (There are a few I’m quite excited about.) Without further ado, let’s take a look.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but a compilation of the more heavily marketed films with either well known directors or actors. The movies are sequentially ordered by release date, not by preference.

Verdict:

Great movie, one that will stay with you for a long time.

Overview:

Set in the tail end of Imperial China, the movie revolves around a small incident in history — Sun Yat-sen‘s trip to Hong Kong to discuss details of revolution against the Qing Dynasty. Due to the political sensitivity of the visit, revolutionary activists are called upon to protect Sun against assassins sent out by Empress Dowager Cixi.

Though situated at a time of political upheaval, the movie isn’t one that praises the revolutionary effort ad nauseam. It tells the story of ordinary people — the unsung heroes, whose involvement are driven by feelings more basic than superfluous visions of grandeur.
