This was in the news awhile ago: a baby with craniofacial duplication is born in a small village in India. The baby is being worshiped as the reincarnation of the Hindu Goddess due to her rare condition of being born with two heads, two pairs of eyes, two noses, and two mouths. She is, preliminarily determined to be healthy although no CT scan has been done on her brain for further, perhaps precautionary, assessment.
[The striking part of this particular case resides in the brain. The peculiarity of the structure of the scalp potentially leads to two scenarios. The first of which being that there could exist two separate brains each contain its own corpus callosum, joining together at a junction. Or, the brain is stretched to sit in the two skulls while everything, including the vasculature is expanded. The second case doesn’t make sense because it wouldn’t be an efficient system for synaptic transmission. If it were the first case, then there must be competition between the two brains considering the fact that there is only one body to regulate. If one brain repeatedly outcompete the other, would one brain atrophy? If so, what would happen to the face controlled by the atrophied brain? Either case appears to be problematic. Additionally, I really wonder if each of her esophagi connect at a particular point as well since she seems to be eating with both mouths.]
Just a thought.
Anyway, here is a video of the baby from CNN.
